That morning crisp air invigorates my soul. Stepping outside these chilly mornings brings a sense of joy. As I’ve mentioned repeatedly in this column, I love autumn. However, that affection does not extend to winter. While I enjoy a good trip to the mountains for a little snowy fun, I much prefer spending my time in January and February in warm places, like Southeast Asia. I’m not alone in that opinion, as many of my Korean friends also plan yearly excursions to The Philippines, Thailand, and Cambodia as a way to escape the frigid temperatures of Seoul.

| ▲ I recommend purchasing a “professional-grade” monopod. | ||
First on the list is the “selfie-stick.” If you’ve been out and about in Seoul recently, you’ve seen the rapid growth of these monopods designed to hold cell phones and take “selfies.” I’ll be honest; I love them. When traveling, my wife and I always struggle to find unique ways to get new pictures for our scrapbook with the two of us together. However, rather than using the inexpensive models found on the street, I recommend purchasing a “professional-grade” monopod. The reason is two-fold. They can be used with a variety of cameras ranging from point-and-shoot cameras to DSLRs, ensuring you get the best possible picture. The other reason I recommend them, is that many can make use of a tripod-base – making picture taking even easier.
The next item to bring with you dovetails nicely – extra batteries and memory cards for your camera. If you’re like my wife and I, we’re constantly using our cameras to snap pictures and take videos. Unfortunately, this puts an incredible drain on the batteries of our cameras. On a recent outing, my wife’s camera lasted no longer than an hour before the battery died. Thankfully, we were just exploring Seoul. Could you imagine the horror of not being able to take more pictures if we were in exotic locations? Yes, extra batteries are a must. In addition, I recommend taking along an extra memory card or two… just to be sure.
Hopefully your trip will last several days, necessitating a hotel stay. Some hotels provide several power stations in a room, while others sometimes only have one or two free plugs. In this day and age of cell phones, tablets, laptops, cameras, etc., those power stations are filled up quickly. To resolve this dilemma, my wife and I bring a universal power strip. This way we can easily plug in our phones, cameras, and tablets. There’s always enough room and as an added bonus we only have to bring one plug adapter when traveling to a foreign country.
In the same vein, I really recommend bringing a “power brick,” or external battery. Let’s face it phones die quickly today with our constant photo sharing and Internet use. Sometimes we’re able to swap out a battery to keep the device going, but we rarely have more than a single spare. Carrying an external battery allows us to keep devices powered until we return to the hotel in the evening. Many also are equipped with dual USB plugs, meaning two phones can be charged at the same time.
Finally, as much as I’d like to say that when I’m on vacation, I’m on vacation and don’t do any work, that’s rarely the case. I’ve made changes over the years and one of them was to cease bringing my laptop with me. Today’s tablets provide many of the same features as a laptop, meaning I don’t need to burden myself with them. However, there are times when I need to respond to emails or do a lot of research about the next leg of our trip, which means a significant amount of typing. Rather than rely on the virtual keyboard, I recommend getting a tablet case with a Bluetooth keyboard. Not only does it protect the tablet, it makes answering those emails easy.
