I love the outdoors. Ever since I was a young boy in the United States, my family has taken me on adventures. It’s why my personal motto is “To explore the unknown is the greatest adventure.” As I sit behind my computer, firmly embracing middle age, I vow never to stay still and continue my quest to make life awesome.
Before arriving in Korea, I had managed to tick off a number of must-do items from my bucket list. In Hawaii, I rode on horseback across a sandy beach. In Jamaica, I donned water moccasins and climbed a waterfall. Texas saw me whitewater rafting the Rio Grande and Colorado had me navigating sheer cliffs with my 4x4. I even jumped out of a plane from 14,000 feet over the Arizona desert for fun. Despite accomplishing all these tasks, there was one item still on the list that actually scared me a little: bungee jumping.
I don’t know what it was about bungee jumping, but the thought of it terrified me. I know what you’re thinking. “Steve, you jumped out of an airplane from 14,000 feet (4200m)? Why are you afraid of jumping from 140 feet (42m)?” The answer: I don’t know.
That’s the honest truth. I had several opportunities to bungee jump over the years, but I kept making excuses not to do it. That all changed in 2011. My friend John was making his first trip to New Zealand, home to one of the highest bungee jumps in the world. While there, he achieved his goal of completing the jump, despite being afraid of heights. I figured that if he could do it, I must be able to muster the courage to make a small leap of faith in Seoul.
And so I did.
Located about 20 minutes south of Gangnam (via the Shinbundang line and a taxi) is Yuldong Park. Not only is the park great to walk around and enjoy nature, it’s also home to a 42 meter bungee jump. My wife and I arrived at the park and sauntered up to the bungee jumping facility. I nervously inquired about performing a jump, but sadly, they told me that all slots had been sold out for the day. Some might take that as a sign to quit while they were ahead. I am not such a person.
I returned the next day to cross this item off my bucket list. Thankfully, I was one of the first people to arrive that day and was able to secure a jump time. When the appointed time came, I began the ritual. I took everything out of my pockets and placed them into a locker. I then stepped on a scale. A sometimes frightening experience, but necessary to determine one’s weight for the proper resistance band when jumping. Then finally, it was time to don the safety harness.
With the preparations out of the way, I got into the elevator and made my way up to the top of the tower. My heart started beating faster as the gantry elevator ascended. After what seemed an eternity, I arrived at the top of the tower. I can’t remember if words were spoken; however, I do know I was clipped in and given instructions on when to jump.
The time finally came and I received the count down – three… two… one.
I then jumped and the only thing that came to mind was “Bungeeeeeeeeeeee!”
This is what people won’t tell you about bungee jumping – it is far more terrifying than skydiving. With sky diving there’s a sense of free-fall; with bungee jumping there’s an impending sense of doom. The entire time I was falling, I kept thinking to myself, “When is this cord going to catch?”
It’s those few seconds, or at least what seems like a few seconds that gives bungee jumping it’s appeal. Since I’m writing this column for Compass, you know I made the jump. I can summarize the difference between skydiving and bungee jumping: when one is skydiving, there is no sense of depth. You don’t feel as if you’re falling to your doom. However, with bungee jumping, you see the ground and know full well you could perish. That’s what makes it so exciting. Time seems to suspend itself during the fall, and one can actually have time to think about the elasticity of the cord.
As much as I enjoyed skydiving, I would pay to bungee jump again over skydiving. It’s just that much fun.
So as much as this has been an article about bungee jumping, the real lesson should be not to let fears block goals. Get out there and make things happen. Summer is approaching and with it vacations. Take advantage of time off and do something new and make it awesome.
