Last week in Compass I started a conversation about Jeju and what I thought was the best way to see it. Of course, I spoke about the world famous Jeju Olle Trail - an ingenious network of trails wrapping around the island allowing visitors to see it in a way unlike any other. If one is in great shape and has the time to hike 15km or so over several hours, it’s my personal recommendation for an amazing expedition. But what if you’re not in great shape? What if you’re traveling with small children or with elderly family members? Does this mean you’re excluded from experiencing the Jeju Olle and its beauty?
No.
The Jeju Olle Trail was created so that everyone could enjoy the island’s beauty. This also meant those who couldn’t actually hike the trails. What I am about to share with you is an extraordinary way to enjoy Jeju’s Olle Trail. It’s a way the organizers most likely didn’t intend on, but one that even as an avid hiker, I love. Just what is it? It’s the Jeju Olle Trail by car. That’s right by car.
I know what you’re thinking, “Steve, you’re crazy! The Jeju Olle Trail is for hiking.” You know what? You’re right. However, much of the Jeju Olle Trail runs along the island’s major roads and through key destinations. Since the trail was built so visitors could drive to the start of one leg, walk to the start of the next, and then return to their starting point by road, it means the trail’s cornerstones (starting points) are located near car parks or roads. It’s this feature that makes what I am about to tell you possible.
Intrigued? I hope so, because when my wife and I did what I’m about to share with you, it became our most cherished memory on the island.
The Jeju Olle Trail has two passport books (orange and blue). Each book contains information on roughly half the routes. The books gives detailed information about the trail legs including their start, end, and “mid-point” locations. It gives the trail length and provides space for participants to place the start, middle, and ending stamps for each trail.
With a passport (or two) in hand, a car, and a navigation system it’s now possible to set off and enjoy the Jeju Olle Trail by car. Simply choose a starting point and then decide if you will go forward (clockwise) or in reverses (counter-clockwise). When you arrive at the trailhead, stamp your passport or take a photo (or both). It makes for a great souvenir, but we’re about to get that exciting part of the journey.
You see the maps don’t give the precise location of each marker. They might give the name of some landmark, but it is usually impossible to plug in the precise location to the car’s navigational system. So what do you do? You explore. You take in the sights of Jeju as you drive from one location to the next. Last week, I mentioned that while hiking the Jeju Olle Trail, orange and blue ribbons were tied along the route to make where one needed to go next. Keeping that in mind, when driving to a mid-point marker or cornerstones, everyone in the car can get involved in the trip by keep an eye out for them.
It’s this aspect of the trip that makes it so exciting. Knowing you’re close to the marker, but not really knowing where it is. Slowing down the car, peering out the windows, following one ribbon onto the next, until you catch a glimpse of the gansae marker. When you do, you’re overcome with a rush of excitement, much like a pirate finding his treasure cache after following an old map.
Traveling the Jeju Olle Trail by car also means you can see more of the island in a day and take in some unexpected sights. On our recent trip, my wife and I were able to traverse of routes 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 in a single day. That translates to seeing about a quarter of Jeju’s wonderful coastline. We also took in many of the islands iconic attractions and a few hidden gems, like Yakchunsa (약천사), along the way. To get a better idea of the experience, take a look at this video blog. It’s the entire day condensed into one hour and will allow you to share in our journey’s excitement. If you’re in Jeju I hope you’ll take an opportunity to experience the trail in this way. If you do, please let me know.
