<원문>
“There’s no way you’re going to fit in there, Steve,” Rachel said to me as I looked at the rice box. Never one to back away from a challenge, I gave my camera bag to my wife and promptly walked up to the large wooden box. To be truthful, I wasn’t sure if I could actually get in, but curiosity got the better of me and threw my leg over the side… We’ll come back to this part of the story a little later.
This week in Compass we’re going to one of my favorite, if not my favorite destination in the Seoul Metro area. It’s a location that many in the area have been in and around, but might have never fully explored. When I was in Arizona (USA), I’d often run into people who had lived in the state for ten or twenty years and never visited the Grand Canyon. This place is like that. Where am I talking about? The Hwaseong Fortress and Haengung.
Okay, so why am I recommending this as a place to visit and explore? The reason is five-fold.
First, the fortress itself is beautiful. The entire structure was completed in just two years between 1794 and 1796 under the direction of primary architect Jeong Yak-yong. Until this time, many Korean fortresses were primarily relegated to the mountains. Yes, there were walled cities, but few like this. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, the nearly 5km fortress wall takes visitors past the four cardinal gates.
Sure you can walk around Namdaemun in Seoul, but at this fortress you can climb inside and up into most of the gates to learn what it would have been like to guard the King. The fortress also boasts a number of other design innovations, not found anywhere else in Korea, making it a truly unique experience.
After walking around the fortress’ perimeter, head to the Haenggung, or King’s Retreat (detached palace). Unlike other haenggungs in Korea, this one is a little more elaborate. The underlying reason was King Jeongjo wanted to move the capital of Korea from Seoul to Suwon to be closer to where his father, Crown Prince Sado was buried. The palace offers not only a glimpse into the past, but also several hands-on experiences for youths – a great way to keep them grounded in this digital age.
It’s here you can find the rice chest experience. As the story goes, Crown Prince Sado was placed in a rice chest on orders from his father, King Yeongjo. After eight days, the Crown Prince passed away. As I alluded to at the start of this week’s column, the chest is open and allows visitors to climb inside to experience what it would have been like to be put to death in this manner. Usually this is an activity for children, but Sado was 27 when he died, and thus fully-grown, making this an interesting activity for adults as well – and yes, I was able to fit inside. All 194cm of me.
Near the Haenggung is the Suwon Hwaseong Museum. This combination of outdoor and indoor permanent exhibits provides detailed accounts of regional history and the fortress.
But let’s get back to the Haenggung for more fun. The courtyard in front of the Haenggung is also known for its performances, which are perhaps some of the best in Korea. Tuesday through Sunday (11am and 3pm), the best martial arts display I’ve ever seen in Korea takes place. This isn’t just some ordinary Tae Kwan Do performance, it is the Muye24Ki. A comprehensive display or martial skills bringing together hand-to-hand combat, swordplay, spears, and traditional Korean archery. Saturdays (March – November, 2pm) also showcases various Korean performing arts like Jultagi. The fun doesn’t stop there, either.
Near Paldalmun (Southern Gate) is a great market situated along side the Suwon Stream. Inside you won’t find a lot different from other local markets, but there are some great deals to be had (I was able to get a custom hanbok at a very low price). Plus the food is amazing. After a long day of walking around the fortress, some fried chicken and beer or samgyeopsal might just be what you need. Near the East Gate and Command Post you can try your hand at traditional archery, too. It’s a lot harder than it looks and especially fun when competing against friends and family members for the honor of top shot.
As you can see, there’s a lot to see and do. So much so, that I return time and time again- especially to walk the Fortress walls because each season presents itself in a beautiful and unique way. If you haven’t fully explored the area, I hope you will and come to understand why it’s my favorite place.
