2014 has made for an interesting spring. The warm weather arrived sooner than expected, with glorious 20-degree days, prompting Korea’s beloved cherry blossoms to bloom earlier than expected in many locations. Then cruelly, Mother Nature decided to exercise her woman’s prerogative and turn down the thermostat again. She gave us periods of rain and near freezing nights. It’s just like what Katy Perry sang; “You change your mind, like a girl changes clothes… 'Cause you're hot then you're cold. You're yes then you're no.” Thankfully this all appears to be changing with forecasted weather reaching over 20-degrees by the weekend. So what to do?
Probably the most well-known Seoul-based cherry blossom festival takes place near Yeouido Park. Over 1,500 beautiful cherry trees line Yeouiseo-ro, making it one of the most beautiful spots in Korea. Because of the draw, traffic can be heavy, if not impossible – so don’t even bother trying to drive there. Seriously. In past years, the roads around the National Assembly Building have looked like parking lots. This year is worse because of the traffic detours in several areas within Seoul due to the Avengers 2 filming schedule. If you’re planning on visiting this area, you’re much better off taking the subway.
Most going to this cherry blossom festival opt to cruise the lined roads, but fail to embrace the emergence of spring. The burst of color from the once dull and boring lifeless trees is why cherry blossoms enthrall us. For months our lives have been devoid of color, but that has all changed with the arrival of these beautiful flowers. So don’t squander their gift to the world by taking a few pictures and leaving. Plan your day around viewing them and making it a little extra special.
Creativity feeds the soul. Just about everyone is snapping pictures of cherry blossoms. As pretty as they are, after a time, all pictures start to look the same. Why not express your uniqueness by taking creative pictures with a small mascot? I travel the world with my friend and companion Little T. We’ve been throughout Asia and even to the artic. Some of the most memorable and fun trips have been finding places to pose with him. This spring, bring a small token with you – it livens up the scene and makes an ordinary picture a conversation starter.
While I did mention the Yeouido festival in Seoul at the top of this column, the truth of the matter is that one doesn’t need to go into Seoul or down to Jinhae for awesome cherry blossom experiences. Throughout the nation, cherry trees have been planted in just about every major town and in many apartment complexes. Chances are; there are roads lined with cherry blossoms near you. The primary benefit of seeking out cherry blossoms near your home is you can avoid the crowds and take a leisurely stroll. Spring is meant to be enjoyed and not to be rushed through. In my opinion, having 20-30 cheery trees blossoming all to myself trumps fighting a space on a crowded walkway near one of the popular venues. It allows me to enjoy being with nature.
On that note, I’d like to make one last recommendation. I’m a huge fan of picnics. When the weather dipped, my soul darkened a little. However, now that is changing with the rising mercury. Whether your visiting a popular cherry blossom venue or staying close to home, get together with your friends and plan a picnic. Stop for a few hours and sit underneath the blossoming trees or in nearby parks. Play badminton, catch, Frisbee, or other fun games surrounded by nature. We spend far too much time indoors in this technology driven life. The cherry blossoms symbolize new life, so let’s all get out and enjoy it.
