Have you ever set out on a trip, get almost there, and then find that a typhoon has decided to ruin your plans? It has to me and rather than let it spoil the special get-away I had planed for my wife, we used the cancelation as a way to explore a new part of the world. By changing direction and setting off on a new course, our adventure was preserved, albeit to an entirely new destination. That event serves as the perfect example as to how I look at life, because you never know where it will take you.
In 2010, my wife and I were planning a weekend trip to Jeju. Still relatively new to the Korean peninsula, we hadn’t traveled extensively, so each and every destination still brimmed with newness. To get to Jeju, we opted to take join a tour and ferry our way to “Korea’s Hawaii” from Mokpo.
Crammed into a motor coach, we left Seoul late Friday evening and rode overnight to the ferry terminal. Upon arrival, Mother Nature had decided to play rough that day. Palm trees near the docks were thrust sideways and strong gusts pelted the shore. It wasn’t pretty and about an hour before our scheduled departure, the boat ride was canceled for safety reasons.
I’m not going to lie. I was disappointed.
I had my heart set on Jeju, but then I stepped back and re-evaluated the situation. “What could we do now?” we asked ourselves. The answer: take a trip to Boseong.
The rolling hills of Boseong are synonymous with green tea in Korea, but very few know about its history. Green tea came to Korea in the 9th century from China after a Korean envoy brought some back with him. The original green tea growing locations were actually on the slopes of Jirisan. Tea wasn’t planted in the Boseong area until the 1930s when Japanese tea enthusiasts noticed the area was perfect the perfect place for it.
The first commercial plantation opened in 1939, but after Japan’s defeat in World War II, the area fell into disarray. In the late 1950s, a Korean businessman bought the plantation to revitalize it. Today, Boseong incorporates some 561 hectares (5,610,000 square meters) of tea growing land.
We arrived at the plantation when it was early, and thankfully the morning mist still blanketed the rolling hills of the tea fields. The path up the mountain was muddy and the streams overflowed with water, but it didn’t matter. I was in heaven. Being outdoors, even on a gloomy day like this, was amazing.
We ascended to the top of the short hill and were treated with stellar views of the terraces. The aforementioned mist swept down over the hillside like a mother wrapping a blanket over a sleeping child. My wife and I sat on a nearby bench and quietly sipped some tea we picked up at the gift shop we passed. While not what we had intended for the day, this moment more than made up for it.
That’s what I’d like you to take away from this column: even though a trip might not be perfect, there can be perfect moments in them, if you’re open to the experience. We never know where life will take us and the journey is just as important as the destination, and sometimes more so.
I’ve hoped you’ve enjoyed these Compass columns as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them. Unfortunately, this will be my final entry. As life often does, it presents us with new choices and directions. As such, it’s time for me to set off on a new adventure. I sincerely hope you will continue explore this magnificent world around you and until I see you next, remember to stay true to yourself and always be awesome.
