“Do you want makgeolli?” the kind ajumma asked me as she dropped a handful of octopus bits and muscles into the pajeon batter being grilled before me. Shaking my head in the affirmative, she smiled and quickly retrieved the familiar green and white bottle. I poured for my friends while we waited for our post hike meal, savoring the time together and the memories we had just made.

It was perhaps one of the best trekking experiences I’ve had in Korea and this week’s Compass destination. For this epic trip, we’re heading south of Seoul to Tongyeong. Specifically, I’m talking about a little known hike on one of the city’s surrounding islands, Saryangdo.

It doesn’t matter if you drive yourself or take public transportation to Tongyeong, because once you arrive in the city, traveling to Saryangdo requires taking a ferry from the mainland. While several ferries service Saryangdo, the easiest to secure passage on is one leaving from the Sarangdo Yeogaekseon Terminal Ferries leave throughout the day beginning at 7am and cost 5,000원 per adult.

Once on Saryangdo, you’ll need to make your way to the desired trailhead. I recommend something on the far side of the island, as the experience is one that makes the effort of getting there worthwhile. However, this also presents a problem. If you drive your own car you can’t really drive yourself to the trailhead and leave your car, or else you’d have to double back to retrieve it. This hike is designed to trailblaze over the island’s rocky spine, so leave your car on the mainland and secure public transportation (taxi) on Saryangdo. If this seems like it might be a little too cumbersome, hiking groups based out of Seoul make weekend trips to Tongyeong and have this hike as part of their itinerary. Joining these groups takes all the fuss out of trying to plan it yourself and deposits you at the trailhead worry-free.

Saryangdo is crisscrossed by several trails and the longest paths connect to form a route around 6-8km long. Trail difficulty rates between easy and moderate, not because they are especially long, but because the trail requires hikers to navigate jagged rocks, walk along a mountainous ridge, and endure multiple elevation changes of about 400 meters.

From the trailhead, saunter through rice fields, following the marked path. In a mere matter of minutes, the trail starts angling upward, first at an easy incline and then later becoming steep. The last several meters leading to the 398m peak is so steep, most hikers resort to clamoring hand over foot to get to the top. When conquered, you’ll be rewarded with amazing panoramic views of the island and coast.

The trail continues downward a bit before leveling out. If you found the first ascent exhausting, this section is very welcomed. Wild flowers dot the trail in spring, making the latter part of March and early April an ideal time to make the trip. The trail continues meandering until you’re faced with an awesome climb to 400m. While not as steep as the first peak on the trail, what makes this one memorable is a series of ropes installed on the mountain’s slope. They aren’t necessarily needed to make it to the top, but using them does make it easier, and let’s face it, fun.

Following along the uplift’s ridge, the hike is largely uneventful, yet remains beautiful. Awonderfully crafted wooden staircase mounted against the rocky buttress signals the hike’s end is near. The trail also splits and I should offer a word of caution here. It’s important to take the trail to the right, as it leads back to the ferry terminal. The left branch is another trail elsewhere and could add another few hours to your hike, and if time is short, could mean missing the last ferry back to Tongyeong.

The trail ends about a kilometer from the ferry terminal and an assortment of pojangmachas. The location is the perfect place to celebrate a completed journey and relax until the return ferry comes to collect you. If you’re looking for a great hike in the southern region now that the weather as turned a little warmer, this one gets one of my highest recommendations.
