My fondest memories growing up in the United States revolved around travel. For two-to-three weeks each summer, my family would navigate the American south in our station wagon enjoying the National Parks. We’d stay in lodges, have picnics among the pines, and traverse the mountains on epic hikes. On two trips (one to Big Bend National Park and a second to Yellowstone National Park), we opted for another kind of experience: whitewater rafting.
These were exhilarating experiences that I remember to this day. If I close my eyes, I can picture high canyon walls, the sensation of the churning river under me, and the sheer fright I experienced as a young man when presented with a giant wall of water.
Once, while rafting the Snake River (located just outside Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, USA), the rapids we hit were so strong, it launched our raft into the air. The river guide kept shouting, “Keep paddling! Keep paddling!” However, for a few seconds, there was nothing to paddle – we were completely out of the water.
It was awesome!
To this day, I look back with very fond memories to those first two trips down a roaring river. It’s a love that I took with me to Korea.
By far my favorite place to travel on the peninsula is Gangwondo. In my opinion it’s the most picturesque location and my personal choice for fall foliage. However, this week in Compass, we’re talking about rafting, and this eastern province has three popular destinations: Donggang (Dong River) in Yeongwol, Naerincheon (Naerin Stream) in Inje, and Hantangang in Cheolwon.
Yeongwol's Donggang River spans 72 kilometers from Jeongseon to Yeongwol. The river offers several locations to choose from for rafting. Unlike some of the raging rapids I’ve rafted in the US, the waters on the Donggang are slower and calm. Yes, there are whitewater patches, but nothing out of the ordinary. This makes the Donggang a perfect location for those wanting an introduction to the sport or possibly weak swimmers. Arayeon Valley is especially beautiful and my recommendation for those looking for a more relaxed trip.
The Naerincheon originates in the Mt. Odae valley and then carves out a beautiful 60km route. The popular 16km river course between Gungdong Resort in Inje and Bamgol sees more than a million people a year. It offers a great balance between gushing whitewater rapids and those of the calmer variety.
While known for its unusual rock formations, such as the Giamgoeseok, the Hantangang is about 90 minutes from Seoul. Cascading through several canyons makes this, in my opinion, the most scenic of the rivers to raft. It’s also quite close to the DMZ, which adds a little excitement. You’ll experience eight different rapids and snap great pictures of waterfalls along the way.
In the United States, a trip down a river means doing everything possible to stay in the boat. That’s the same in Korea, except when in some of the more calm spots along the river. Here it’s not uncommon to have your river guide play a few games and try to eject passengers from the raft. It’s all in good fun, and on hot summer days, taking a dip in the sometimes chilly river is quite refreshing.
If you’ve never been whitewater rafting, make this summer your first. The memories I made with my family 30 years ago are still with me today, I know they’ll stay with your family as well.
