매번 내가 연중 이맘때를 좋아한다는 말을 고장난 레코드처럼 반복하는 것 같지만, 이번에 정말이다. 나는 10월이 되고 한반도에 단풍이 아름답게 물이들면 모든 걸 내려놓고 어딘가 환상적 경치를 찾아 차를 몰고 떠나고 싶어진다.

이번주에 우리가 찾아갈 곳 역시 한국에서 내가 가장 좋아하는 곳 중 하나다. 역사적으로도 의미가 깊은 곳일 뿐 아니라 가을의 정취가 그만인 곳이다. 어디냐고? 경주를 향해 떠나 보자.

경주는 벽 없는 박물관이라 불리는 도시다. 왜 그렇게 불리는지 잠시 접어두고 먼저 한국의 유명한 유적지인 불국사를 방문하자.

불국사는 578년 창건된 절로 고려와 조선시대를 지나며 개축과 증축을 반복했다. 임진왜란 때 불국사는 파괴됐으나 1604년 재건축을 시작해 1805년까지 보수됐다. 그러나 불국사는 이후 암흑기에 접어들어 많은 약탈을 당했다.

불국사는 한국사찰로 드물게 두 개의 석탑을 가지고 있다. 이 두 석탑은 한국의 귀중한 보물이다. 한국관광청의 설명은 다음과 같다.

“동쪽의 석가탑은 두 개의 기단(돌로된 토대) 위에 전통 한국풍으로 만들어졌다. 다보탑은 8각형의 탑으로 네 개의 돌계단과 난간이 있는 십자형 기단 위에 세워졌다. 여기에 돌로 만들어졌다는 것이 믿기 어려울만큼 빼어난 장인정신이 깃들어 있다. 석가탑과 달리 다보탑은 오랜 세월에도 손상되지 않고 최초의 모양을 유지하고 있다. 두 탑은 8세기 통일신라 건축의 대표적 사례다. 사각형, 팔각형, 원형이 한 구조물 안에 절묘하게 조화를 이루고 있다.”

아마 내가 불국사를 좋아하는 주된 이유는 불국사가 화려하지 않기 때문일 것이다. 불국사 경내를 조용히 거닐다 보면 나는 유구한 역사의 숨결을 느낄 수 있다. 낡은 조각과 색 바랜 건물에서 영적 에너지가 샘솟는다. 나는 불국사의 이런 점이 좋다.

나는 석탑 조각 중간의 틈과 흠집들에 주목했다. 석탑을 복원하기 위한 노력에도 불구하고 이미 복원이 불가능할만큼 주요 부분들이 훼손됐거나 훼손되고 있는 부분들이다. 이런 현상은 건물 서까래에서도 나타난다. 난 이런 부분이 좋다.

관광명소를 방문하기로 했다면 석굴암을 빼놓을 수 없다. 이 인공동굴은 유네스코 문화유산으로 지정될 정도로 경이롭다. 불국사에서 올라가는 길에서 아름다운 가을의 풍경을 즐길 수도 있다.

경주 중앙에서 남쪽에 위치한 남산은 상대적으로 작은 산이다. 겨우 500m밖에 되지 않는 높이지만 작다고 해서 무시할 건 아니다. 사실 벽 없는 박물관이라는 이름은 남산의 유구한 역사 때문에 붙여진 것이다. 이 남산 땅 아래에서 몇 년에 걸쳐 수천구의 불교유물이 발굴됐다. 남산은 10월에 아름다운 색으로 갈아입어 등산하기 가장 좋은 시기이기도 하다.

남산의 구릉을 등산로가 가로지른다. 등반이 어렵지는 않으나 딱 맞는 편한 신발을 신길 바란다. 삼릉에서 출발해 정상인 금오봉까지 오르는 코스가 일반적이다.

정상에서 펼쳐지는 경관은 매우 장관이다. 정상에서 능선을 따라 용장사로 내려올 수 있다. 남산의 세 번째 등산로는 동쪽 안내센터와 통일전에서 시작해 칠불암을 지나 삼층석탑이 있는 천룡사에서 끝나는 길이다. 이 곳 주변에 커다란 석조 불상들이 곳곳에 있어 산행이 더욱 즐겁다.

단풍이 절정에 이르는 몇주간 대도시를 떠나 자연으로 가길 바란다. 틀림없이 후회하지 않을 것이다. 우리 가족은 그렇게, 외국에서 한국을 찾은 친구들과 함께 한반도의 매혹적 가을을 보여주러 떠날 것이다.

I feel I might be sounding like a broken record, saying each week in Compass how much I enjoy this time of year, but the truth of the matter is, that is really the case. I often wish I could drop everything and do nothing else except drive across the peninsula during the month of October, taking in the wondrous destinations and marveling at the nation’s changing foliage.

This week, I thought we’d head down to one of my favorite destinations in Korea – not only because of its amazing history, but because it also is stunning during the fall. Where am I taking you this time? We’re setting our navigational computers for Gyeongju.

The city is often referred to as the museum without walls, and we’ll be coming to that origin in just a moment, but before we do, let’s visit one of Korea’s most famous spots Bulguksa. The temple dates back to 578, when it was originally commissioned. While the temple underwent a few renovations and expansions during the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty, it was destroyed during the Imjin war. It was rebuilt again in 1604 and was continually refined until 1805. However, after this, the Bulguksa entered a dark period, as it was frequently robbed.

Bulguksa not only has two pagodas (which is a rarity among Korean temples), but the two most precious to the nation. According to the Korea Tourism Organization, “The three-story Seokgatap, on the east, has two stereobates (stone foundation levels) and is crafted in traditional Korean style. Dabotap is an octagonal pagoda standing on a cruciform base with stone staircases on all four sides and a railing. Given its superb craftsmanship, it is difficult to believe that it was constructed of stone. Unlike Seokgatap, Dabotap has survived the passage of time with its original structure still intact. Both serve as outstanding examples of 8th-century Unified Silla architecture and skillfully balance square, octagonal, and circle forms in one design.”

Probably the reason I enjoy visiting this temple most is because it isn’t sparkly. Walking around the grounds, I could sense its history – its spiritual energy. It was oozing from the beaten sculptures and faded buildings. These aspects really endeared me to Bulguksa. I was absolutely captivated by the crooks and crannies of the stone carvings – many of which had lost significant portions of their bodies or were quickly approaching a phase when significant restorative efforts would be needed to keep them in tact. This could also be seen in rafters, where giant beams had splits running their length. I loved it.

If you choose to visit this iconic location, don’t miss out on the Seokguram Grotto. This artificial hermitage inside the mountain is stunning and also has been designated a UNESCO site. Hiking up from the temple complex offers some stunning opportunities to take in the seasonal colors.

Namsan is a relatively small mountain to the south of the city center. It measures just shy of 500m in height, but that doesn’t mean it’s without charm. In fact, the phrase, “the museum without walls” was coined from this location because of its rich history. On its mountainous terrain, thousands of Buddhist tombs and relics have been recovered over the years, making it one of the best places to hike, and during this month, take in the colors.

Namsan is crisscrossed with trails over the hilly terrain. While the climbs are not that difficult, it is advised to wear comfortable shoes with a fair amount of traction. Those starting from the Samneung area can take one of the advised routes through the same named valley to Geumobong Peak. It offers spectacular views of the surrounding area. From there, travel along the ridgeline to Yongjangsa. The third recommended trail begins at the eastern Information Center and Tongiljeon and heads south to the Chilburam Hermatige and ultimately ends at the three storied stone pagoda of Cheollyonsa. Aside from these sites, the large carved Buddhas on multiple stones situated across the mountain also make the trek worthwhile.

With the awesome colors coming into their own these next few weeks, be sure to get out of the big cities and into the countryside. You won’t be disappointed. My family and I will be taking that advice and even bring friends visiting Korea from abroad to some of these trails so show them the magic of fall.
